Tolerances are everything. The difference between a good product and a great product are the tolerances. Throughout my career I have been told many times that I need to know my tolerances. This was usually a frustrated attempt to make me move faster, not sweat over the finer details, and complete the project as quickly as possible to ensure a profit. I was never able to grasp that frame of mind. Why can’t we have both. Small details matter and when you hold yourself to a high standard of craftsmanship even while doing mundane tasks something magic happens. Not every job is a custom cabinet but when you apply your craft and scrutinize every detail of a project you blur the line between functionality and art creating something pleasing to the eye and even stirring emotion.

My first mentor taught me that by putting in small details all over the course of a project that are not necessary and skipped (or not even considered) by others will result in a superior product. He said that even if the client or others not directly involved in the project cannot specifically tell you why your product is better, they will know it is better because they are subconsciously picking up on those fine details that everyone skips over.

It takes a trained eye to pick up on the small differences, but they make a substantial impact on people when they see the finished product. Anyone can learn to be a contractor and to build, but it takes knowledge AND passion to create something beautiful and lasting. Its the difference between a skill and a craft.
